What is covered by the new regulation?
The regulation applies to plants produced using certain new genomic techniques, as well as food and feed products derived from them.
Two categories of NGT plants have been introduced:
NGT1 are considered equivalent to conventionally bred plants. They will not be classified as GMO’s and will not require GMO labelling required.
NGT2 will remain subject to an authorisation process and specific labelling requirements.
The impact: The introduction of NGT1 products may affect transparency in the market and create new challenges for supply chain management, as these products will not be identifiable through GMO labelling.
What could this mean for VLOG and GMP+ certified companies
VLOG has announced its intention to introduce NGT-related requirements in its standard update planned for September 2027, effective from January 2028. This means that companies supplying VLOG-certified customers may be affected before the EU regulation becomes applicable.
