PRESS RELEASE - GMP+ International launches a new international standard for Feed Life Cycle Assessment

Rijswijk, 14 April 2026 – GMP+ International announces the launch of the new Feed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) standard on 6 May 2026. This standard provides the animal feed sector with a harmonised, transparent, and future-proof method to calculate and communicate the environmental impact of feed.

The introduction of the Feed LCA standard responds to the growing demand for clear and consistent sustainability methodologies within the supply chain. The standard is based on internationally recognised LCA methodology and aligns with the guidelines of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for feed. This enables the Feed LCA to support companies in meeting the increasing demand for harmonised data by customers, retailers, and regulations.

Intensive collaboration with the sector

The Feed LCA standard is the result of an intensive and broadly supported development process. Over the past year, GMP+ International has worked closely with the GMP+ Community and OVOCOM. Stakeholders from across the sector have been actively involved through think tank sessions, public consultations, and reviews by GMP+ subcommittees and the GMP+ International Expert Committee.

This collaborative approach has resulted in a robust and practical standard that meets the needs of the feed sector.

Martine Boon, Managing Director of GMP+ International, emphasises the importance of this collaboration:
“The development of Feed LCA demonstrates what we as a sector can achieve through close collaboration. By combining knowledge and practical experience, we have developed a standard that is not only reliable and practical, but also truly adds value for companies in the chain. This standard helps the sector address sustainability challenges in a consistent way and prepares it for future requirements.”

Frank D’Hondt, Managing Director of OVOCOM, also highlights the importance of harmonisation:
“The existing harmonisation in feed safety among the various feed schemes is of great importance to all stakeholders in the supply chain. The same can apply to sustainability! That is why, more than a year ago, it was a no-brainer for me to collaborate with GMP+ to combine our LCA expertise, align methodologies, and now arrive at a substantively identical document.”

Support via GMP+ Academy

Alongside the launch of the standard, an e-learning module is also being introduced via the GMP+ Academy. This training has been specifically developed to support GMP+ certified companies in implementing and applying the new standard.
