Why MI5.7 Feed LCA matters for your company
The feed sector faces growing sustainability requirements and customer expectations. Until now, companies have worked with different calculation methods, making comparison difficult. MI5.7 Feed LCA gives you one reliable and internationally aligned method to measure and report the environmental footprint of feed across its lifecycle. It ensures consistency across the supply chain and supports transparent communication. The standard is practical, accessible, and easy to integrate into your existing GMP+ Feed Responsibility Management System.
Key benefits of MI5.7 Feed LCA
Harmonised approach: One consistent method for calculating environmental impact categories, such as land use, aligned with recognised LCA methodologies.
Reliable results: LCA methodology aligned with PEFCR Feed supports correct application of life cycle assessment, including the use of verified data to increase reliability of results.
Practical and user-friendly: Designed for non-experts helping companies apply LCA correctly without unnecessary complexity
Seamless integration: Fits seamlessly within your current GMP+ Feed Responsibility Management System.
Credible reporting: Provides a solid baseline to better understand hotspots and track developments over time. By using recognised calculation tools and recognised data sources such as the GFLI database, companies can further strengthen the quality, transparency and consistency of their environmental footprint results.
Support to get started: Training via the GMP+ Academy and guidance through our helpdesk.
Development process
MI5.7 Feed LCA is the result of an intensive development process together with our GMP+ Community. Over the past year, we worked with stakeholders through Think Tank sessions, ecosystem analysis, public consultation, and reviews by our Subcommittees and International Expert Committee. This collaboration ensures a robust and practical standard for the sector.
Already certified for the MI5.5 Carbon footprint of feed?
For organisations currently working with the MI5.5 Carbon footprint of feed (pilot), MI5.7 Feed LCA is the next step forward. It builds on the pilot experience and provides the harmonised, long-term standard for the feed related environmental footprint going forward.
Transition from MI5.5 to MI5.7 Feed LCA
With the introduction of MI5.7 Feed LCA, the MI5.5 Carbon Footprint of Feed (pilot) will be gradually phased out.
All MI5.5 certificates already issued remain valid until their stated expiry dates, but no later than 31 December 2026.
Companies are expected to plan their transition and review their current MI5.5 approach, preparing updates where needed once the MI5.7 Feed LCA standard becomes available.
Companies should contact their certification bodies as soon as possible but at the latest before their MI5.5 statement expires to request an audit under MI5.7 Feed LCA.
Early engagement with certification bodies is recommended to ensure smooth scheduling and uninterrupted certification.
