Aflatoxin B1: increased attention needed for new harvest

Signals of elevated Aflatoxin B1 levels have been received for several feed materials and origins. The results from the new harvest are still coming in, which means that the overall picture is not yet complete. Be alert in the coming weeks and pay particular attention to feed intended for dairy cattle.

What is the issue?

GMP+ International has received signals indicating elevated levels of Aflatoxin B1 in different feed materials. These signals include maize (gluten) originating from Hungary, maize originating from Northern France, and sugar beet pulp from Southern and Southwest Germany.

At this moment, analyses of products from the new harvest are still ongoing. Therefore, it is too early to draw firm conclusions about the overall situation or the geographical extent of the issue.

Depending on the target animals the contaminant can exceed the limit(s). Aflatoxin B1 requires particular attention when feed is intended for dairy cattle. The GMP+ feed safety limit for Aflatoxin B1 in dairy cattle feed is 0.005 mg/kg (5 ppb). For QM-Milch feed, the limit is 0.0025 mg/kg (2.5 ppb).

What can you do?

Stay alert in the coming weeks.

Pay additional attention to Aflatoxin B1 when purchasing and using maize, maize by-products, sugar beet pulp and other potentially affected feed materials.

Take the origin of the product and available analysis results into account in your risk assessment. For maize, the minimum monitoring requirements depend on the maize’s country of origin and the type of processing company. For more information see TS1.7 Monitoring.

If your company is involved in deliveries of non-compliant feed, you must report the incident to your Certification Body and GMP+ International. To do so, please use the EWS-form. You can find more information about the Early Warning System and submitting a report on our  website. Previously published EWS alerts are available after you log in on the GMP+ platform.
